About Americans in Orbit-50 Years, Inc.- Americans in Orbit-50 Years is headquartered in Madison, Alabama, just outside Huntsville, Alabama. (home of Marshall Space Flight Center, U.S. Space and Rocket Center, and Space Camp)

The mission is to develop and manage a program to commemorate the 50 year anniversary of NASA’s Friendship 7 mission, create excitement, public awareness of space exploration, and promote the National Space Science Education Program (NSSEP).

 

Why they're important: This non-profit group "plans to (independently) launch two astronauts amd up to 10,000 lbs. of space science experiments in 2012"


Applied Minds was founded by ex-Disney Imagineers Danny Hillis and Bran Ferren that provides technology, design, R&D, and consulting services to multiple firms, including, General Motors, Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin, Herman Miller,among others.

Their  out of the box thinking for groups like  Nasa could prove useful for other space industry businesses.


Based out of Mesquite, TX, look for Armadillo to be a leading contender in the Lunar Lander Challenge at this year's X Prize in New Mexico.

Aurora Aerospace is an astronaut training center based in Florida dedicated to commercial space enterprise and related activities. 


Established in September 2006, Benson Space Company (BSC) seeks to provide the first, safest and lowest cost astronaut-making spaceflights for the emerging personal spaceflight market.  BSC is led by Jim Benson, founder and former chairman/CEO/CTO of SpaceDev,  which developed the world’s only hybrid rocket motors used for human spaceflight.

Based in Las Vegas and founded by Robert Bigelow (see Faces of Space), it is the only private company with a spacecraft currently in orbit, the Genesis 1.  Genesis 2 is expected to launch in late May 2007.

Bigelow's mission is to provide a low earth orbit space complex for humans, which will be sold to large companies and even countries.


Founded by Jeff Bezos (see Faces of Space) of Amazon.com fame, Blue Origin is developing the New Shepard, a Vertical-takeoff, Vertical-landing passenger and cargo spacecraft.  Trips are scheduled to start in 2010. 
Governed by a statewide board of directors, the California Space Authority (CSA) is a nonprofit corporation representing the commercial, civil, and national defense/homeland security interests of California's diverse space enterprise community in all four domains: industry, government, academia, and workforce.
Frontier Astronautics is a Limited Liability Company dedicated to providing hard to get technology and services to the burgeoning entrepreneurial space industry. They specialize in affordable and reliable Rocket Engines and Attitude Control Systems. 
Futron provides leading-edge decision support consulting services to organizations throughout the aerospace and telecommunications industries. This firm Conducted two studies regarding humans who want to travel to space.

The prime objective of ISRO is to develop space technology and its application to various national tasks. India is developing a space program that will be worth following over the coming years.

International Robotics, Inc. successfully employs cutting-edge Technologies, Futuristic Icons, Special f/x, and advanced, Interactive Robotic Systems for Business, Promotion, and Communication. Robotic technology could become invaluable to future space explorers.  


ISU recently celebrated their 20th anniversary.  Based in Strasbourg, France, ISU develops the future leaders of the world space community.  Peter Diamandis (see Faces of Space) is one of the founders of the International Space University.
Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) created America's first satellite, Explorer 1.  It was established by the Cal Institute of Technology in the 1930s and is a NASA laboratory.  JPL is based in Pasadena, CA.
JP Aerospace is a volunteer-based organization achieving cheap access to space by just doing it. Their 'Space Ads' program is fairly unique way to generate revenue and they are utilizing airship  technology which could be another method to travel to space. 

 


The  Northrop Grumman Lunar Lander Challenge (often called simply the Lunar Lander Challenge) is a $2 million prize program funded by NASA's Centennial Challenges program. The Challenge offers a series of prizes for the teams that launch a VTVL rocket that achieves the total delta-v that would be equivalent to those needed for a vehicle to move between lunar orbit and the lunar surface. The multi-level competition is conducted by the X PRIZE Foundation, with sponsorship from the Northrop Grumman Corporation, with the prize purses paid by NASA. The competition is held annually at the X PRIZE Cup, making its debut at the 2006 Wirefly X PRIZE Cup in October, 2006.
Lunar Rocket and Rover is a southern California based firm founded in 2002 by Robert Kleinberger which has launched rockets from Cape Canaveral and Vandenberg. They have also developed a successful educational outreach program that reaches students from elementary to the university level.

Formed in 2002, the Mars Institute purpose is to further the scientific study, exploration, and public understanding of Mars.  They are instrumental in public outreach and education of the benefits to humankind of Mars exploration.
A new century of scientific knowledge and exploration of Mars has begun, with the current planning and prospect of many new missions to be launched to the Red Planet. The Mars Institute was created to respond to this opportunity and, out of a need strongly felt by its initiators, to establish an independent nonprofit organization whose sole purpose is to focus on advancing the scientific study and exploration of Mars, with a central commitment to conducting high quality peer-reviewed research, and on sharing knowledge and experiences of Mars exploration with students and the general public worldwide. The Mars Institute strives to provide leadership as an international non-governmental organization for the peaceful advancement of these goals.
