I recently discovered a TED Talk by Jane Poytner,  62MileClub Face of Space, Paragon Space Development Co-Foudner former Biosphere 2 participant. The Biosphere 2 project captivated me when I first heard about it in the late 80’s. It was basically  an enormous  terrarium that was sealed with people, plants, animals. The first mission did not quite go as planned which is explained in the video below, but it could give us a better idea on how humans  might survive and hopefully thrive on future long term off world exploration.

lesson I learned from this video,

  • ” Small stuff counts”
  • If we have difficulty connecting with where we are in the Biosphere 1 (i.e. the Earth), take a deep breath.

We can’t vouch if this program is still open to new applicants, but Virgin Galactic and National Space Society teamed up to create a Space Ambassador program. One participant will be selected for a complimentary trip to space via Virgin Galactic.

From the National Space Society Website

Do you have a passion for space? Would you like to share your enthusiasm with others?

The National Space Society is teaming up with Virgin Galactic to launch a new program to identify Space Ambassadors around the world.

As part of their duties, Space Ambassadors will communicate the value of space research and exploration to their local communities, and one special Space Ambassador will be selected to fly on a Virgin Galactic space flight!

Space Ambassadors can be anyone — you just have to have a passion for space and the ability to effectively communicate that excitement to others. Teachers and artists are particularly encouraged to apply. Membership in the National Space Society is not required to participate, but is encouraged!

As a Space Ambassador, you will be trained to deliver an inspirational, multi-media presentation that describes the importance of space in our daily lives, as well as the promise and possibilities that future space endeavors will enable.

If you would you like to learn more about becoming a Space Ambassador, please fill out and submit the form below. Complete details on eligibility and the application and selection process will be released later this year.
